Awake vs asleep deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease: A critical comparison and meta-analysis
Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry Feb 07, 2018
Ho AL, et al. - This meta-analysis was performed to compare the efficacy of awake vs asleep deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease (PD) under local or general anaesthesia, with regard to the differences in outcomes between these 2 techniques. Awake DBS could lead to less treatment-induced side effects, while DBS under general anaesthesia could lead to lower complication rates overall. However, no significant differences were noted in clinical motor outcomes between the two techniques. Therefore, DBS under general anaesthesia could be considered at experienced centers in patients who were not candidates for traditional awake DBS or prefer the asleep alternative.
