Availability of safety-net sexually transmitted disease clinical services in the US, 2018

American Journal of Preventive Medicine Feb 01, 2020

Leichliter JS, et al. - Given the possible value of safety-net sexually transmitted disease services, including point-of-care testing and treatment, in preventing transmission of sexually transmitted disease, researchers investigated the availability of safety-net sexually transmitted disease clinical services across the US. Data were retrieved from a 2018 survey of US local health departments completed by 326 local health departments (49% response rate). Of these respondents, one-third reported no safety-net sexually transmitted disease services or were not aware of the services; variation in the availability of specific services was observed. Local health departments might seek collaborations with healthcare systems and modifications in screening to expand sexually transmitted disease services without an expansion of resources.
