Autonomic dysfunction of gastric motility in major depression
Journal of Affective Disorders Oct 13, 2017
Kheder SH, et al. - Objectives of this study were to determine dysfunction of gastric motility and gastrointestinal symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) and to examine the duration and severity of this disorder regarding its influence over gastric emptying. Among patients with MDD, gastrointestinal motility was significantly impaired compared to healthy control subjects. In these patients, autonomic complaints were indicated frequently. Over the time of gastric emptying, the duration of MDD had no influence. The authors found a significant negative association between the severity of MDD and Tmax, showing that the Tmax was reached earlier with the progression of MDD. In MDD patients, the slowing of gastric motility was possibly a result of a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.
