Automated detection of periprosthetic joint infections and data elements using natural language processing
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 27, 2020
Fu S, Wyles CC, Osmon DR, et al. - This study was attempted to establish a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm to replicate manual chart review for PJI data elements. Researchers distinguished PJI among all total joint arthroplasty procedures performed at a single academic institution between 2000 and 2017. They used algorithms for all consultation notes, operative notes, pathology reports, and microbiology reports to prognosticate the correct status of PJI based on Musculoskeletal Infection Society criteria. For PJI diagnostic elements, NLP-enabled algorithms have the potential to automate data collection, which could directly improve patient care and augment cohort surveillance and research efforts. Future confirmation is required in other hospital settings.
