Autoimmune diseases involving skin and intestinal mucosa are more frequent in adolescents and young adults suffering from atopic dermatitis

The Journal of Dermatology Sep 27, 2017

Cipriani F, et al. - This analysis appraised the frequency of co-occurrence of atopic dermatitis (AD) and autoimmune diseases. A positive association was affirmed between AD and autoimmune diseases involving skin and intestinal mucosa, but also with systemic lupus erythematosus. On the other hand, the link between AD and type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis demonstrated conflicting results. In order to elucidate the mechanism underlying the observed comorbidity between AD and autoimmune diseases and to develop targeted prevention strategies and treatment, advanced research was warranted.
