Autoantibodies in acquired myasthenia gravis: Clinical phenotype and immunological correlation

Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Feb 25, 2019

Nagappa M, et al. - Using ELISA, researchers examined antibody profile in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and their clinical correlates. Specifically, they analyzed patients with MG for clinical features, MG Foundation of America (MGFA) score, response to treatment, and outcome at last follow-up. Antibodies to acetylcholine receptor (AChR), muscle-specific kinase (MUSK), titin and ryanodine receptor (RYR) were also assessed. Investigators found that patients with MUSK antibodies had oculo-bulbar or generalized MG and frequent respiratory problems; however, most patients improved or remitted with treatment. Titin antibodies were found in 31.8%, and 32.9% had RYR antibodies. Their presence was not correlated with MG age, severity, or thymoma presence. This report highlighted an Indian cohort's spectrum of antibodies in MG. Positivity of AChR-antibody correlated to clinical severity. Outcomes were favorable in most MUSK antibody-positive MG.
