Autoantibodies and scleroderma phenotype define subgroups at high-risk and low-risk for cancer
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases May 02, 2018
Igusa T, et al. - Experts evaluated the cancer risk in distinct serologic and phenotypic scleroderma subsets and compared estimates with the general population. Results demonstrated autoantibody specificity and disease subtype to be biologically meaningful filters that could inform cancer risk stratification in subjects with scleroderma. The cancer-specific risk may vary by scleroderma subtype in antipol-positive patients. An increased breast cancer risk was seen in those with diffuse scleroderma. However high lung cancer risk was seen in those with limited scleroderma. In contrast, during follow-up patients with anticentromere antibodies demonstrated a lower risk of cancer.
