Auras as a prognostic factor in anterior temporal lobe resections for mesial temporal sclerosis
European Journal of Neurology Aug 09, 2018
Adry RARC, et al. - In the present study, researchers tested the premise that the type of pre-operative aura may forecast the post-surgical outcome in patients with medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy due to mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS). For this investigation, out of 1,214 subjects assessed for surgery in the Epilepsy Center of Faculdade de Medicina de São Jose do Rio Preto (FAMERP), a tertiary Brazilian epilepsy center, 400 had anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) for MTS. According to the findings, patients with symptoms and clinical signs that infer extratemporal involvement could have unfavorable outcomes. No differences were found between simple and multiple auras. According to the Engel classification, patients who had extratemporal auras had the worst post-surgical result.
