Auditory training for adult cochlear implant users: A survey and cost analysis study
Ear and Hearing Nov 03, 2019
Reis M, et al. - Researchers sought to report on practices among Australian cochlear implant (CI) audiologists concerning auditory training (AT) for adult CI users with a postlingual hearing loss. Further, they estimated the cost of different AT methods for clients and service providers in comparison with no AT delivery. They analyzed responses of 87 CI audiologists to their survey investigating the range, magnitude, and rationale of AT practices adopted as part of rehabilitation services with adult CI users. Of these, 85.5% reported AT as an essential component of rehabilitation. They adopted home-based and face-to-face methods most frequently to deliver AT. Respondents varied widely with regard to the type of AT, recommended frequency of sessions, and overall duration of programs. The main determinants of the cost incurred by clients were whether the AT was home-based or clinician-led (ie, face-to-face, group-based), program fees, and travel arrangements made by clients, as well as clinicians’ wages and the method chosen to deliver.
