Atypical Schwannoma: A 10-year experience
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 29, 2019
Kocharyan AH, et al. - In this retrospective case review, researchers focused on the clinical presentation related to atypical schwannoma of the cerebellopontine angle, characterization of the pathologic findings, and on the long-term outcome. At tertiary referral center, this inquiry was performed among patients with the histopathologic diagnosis of atypical and benign schwannoma of the cerebellopontine angle seen over a 10-year period. Atypical schwannoma was identified as an intermediate disease process. This disease condition runs an accelerated clinical course and has higher recurrence rate vs vestibular schwannoma. With no increased concern for postoperative complications, the use of traditional operative approaches is possible. Given the higher recurrence rate, the provision of thorough counseling and close follow-up was recommended in these patients.
