Attributable risk of Alzheimer's dementia due to age-related neuropathologies
Annals of Neurology Dec 12, 2018
Boyle PA, et al. - In the present study, researchers investigated the risk of Alzheimer's dementia caused by pathological AD and eight other neuropathologies. Participants were 1,161 subjects came from two clinical-pathologic studies of aging. Out of 1,161 persons, 512 (44.1%) had Alzheimer's dementia at the time of death. All neuropathologic indices were independently related to greater odds of Alzheimer's dementia with the exception of microinfarcts. The data presented in this work showed a total of 83.3% of cases were attributed to all 8 combined indices. Findings revealed that pathologic AD accounts for a considerable percentage of Alzheimer's dementia, but also contributes to multiple other neuropathologies. In total, just over two- thirds of Alzheimer's cases of dementia were due to common age-related neuropathologies, which indicate that other diseases and resilience factors were important.
