Attributable risk of Alzheimer's dementia attributed to age-related neuropathologies
Annals of Neurology Jan 25, 2019
Boyle PA, et al. - Using multivariable logistic regression models, researchers investigated the risk of Alzheimer's dementia attributable to pathologic AD and eight other neuropathologies. This study sample included 1,161 participants from 2 clinical-pathological studies of aging. Of these participants, 512 had Alzheimer's dementia at the time of death. All neuropathologic indices were independently related to greater odds of Alzheimer's dementia with the exception of microinfarcts. In all, 83.3% of cases were attributed to all eight combined indices. According to findings, pathologic AD accounts for a considerable percentage of Alzheimer's dementia but also contributes to multiple other neuropathologies. Just over two-thirds of cases of Alzheimer's dementia were due to common age-related neuropathologies, suggesting that other diseases and resilience factors may be important.
