Attitudes and parameters affecting the behavior toward precursor symptoms of head and neck cancer

ENT Journal Jul 22, 2019

Vlastarakos PV, et al. - Researchers identified the connection of sociodemographic and lifestyle-related factors with the response time from the appearance of symptoms potentially associated with head and neck cancer (HNC) and gain insight into the primary source of health data on this particular region. In addition, specific perceptions about human papillomavirus infection in the head and neck area were investigated. Participants in the study were 1058 adults. A direct connection was discovered between the response time period from the potential appearance of a mouth ulcer/soreness, earache, hoarseness, or painless lump in the neck and alcohol consumption, as well as between smoking and soft-drink consumption and the appearance of hoarseness. There was an inverse association between age and the appearance of a mouth ulcer/soreness and between a person’s educational level and yearly income and the appearance of an earache. Health policymakers and health professionals need to develop policies to raise awareness of HNC danger connected with sexual behavior, particularly among young adults. In targeted campaigns, the repressive effect of alcohol on timely patient response should be demonstrated, and the understanding of the "iceberg phenomenon," often associating common symptoms of the head and neck with HNC, recognized in undergraduate and postgraduate physician training.
