Atrial fibrillation: Possible influences of rate and rhythm control strategy on cognitive performance
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 08, 2018
Damanti S, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed the REgistro POliterapie SIMI database to investigate the possible impact of rate or rhythm control strategy on cognition in older adults with atrial fibrillation (AF; N=1,082; mean age: 80.6 ± 7; 50% male). The study setting included Italian internal medicine and geriatric wards. They found that, upon analysis of logistic regression models—adjusted for age, sex, education, anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy, and comorbidities—rhythm control strategy and education were associated with less likelihood of cognitive impairment. This finding indicated that, in the absence of anticoagulation, AF rhythm control may ward against cognitive decline.
