Atrial fibrillation after gastrointestinal surgery: Incidence and associated risk factors
Journal of Surgical Research Apr 09, 2019
Heywood EG, et al. - The incidence of de novo postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF) following abdominal surgery was determined, along with related risk factors. Researchers identified 2,967 cases, aged ≥65 years undergoing abdominal surgery by querying the Patient History Integrated Data store administrative database. Among these, 187 had postoperative AF within 90 days (6.3%), which was significant. The highest rate of postoperative AF was with small bowel resection (17.2%), the lowest with biliary surgery (4.8%). Development of postoperative AF within 30 days could be forecast by increasing age, congestive cardiac failure, and vascular disease. As postoperative AF is mostly identified after discharge, they emphasize the necessity for postoperative screening.
