Atopic dermatitis in US adults: From population to health care utilization
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Apr 04, 2019
Silverberg JI, et al. - In US adults with atopic dermatitis (AD), researchers assessed the proportion as well as predictors of utilization in outpatient, urgent care, Emergency Department (ED), and hospital settings. In this cross-sectional, population-based study, they included 3495 adults. They used modified United Kingdom Working Party criteria to determine AD. The Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM), the Patient-Oriented Scoring AD (PO-SCORAD), and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS)-itch were used to evaluate AD severity. Findings revealed low rates of outpatient and high rates of urgent care, ED, and hospital visits among the participants. AD severity was identified as the major predictor of outpatient utilization for AD care. Due to racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and/or health care differences, outpatient utilization was reduced and urgent care, ED, and hospital utilization were increased.
