Atopic dermatitis in adults: A population-based study in Finland

International Journal of Dermatology Sep 17, 2021

Kiiski V, Salava A, Susitaival P, et al. - According to the data, the number of adult patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) has increased, and the prevalence of AD in Finnish adults is among the highest reported. The burden of AD is not restricted to childhood as a result of society's ageing.

  • In a national health examination survey, the authors examined 12-month and lifetime prevalences of AD in the Finnish adult population ≥ 30 years of age and analyzed living environment factors, socioeconomic factors, lifestyle-related factors, and serum vitamin D levels for their associations with AD.

  • The lifetime prevalence was 21.9%, while the 12-month prevalence was 10.1%.

  • The highest prevalence was observed in participants aged 30-39.

  • Prevalence declined with age.

  • Higher education had no effect on the subjects themselves, but subjects with highly educated parents were more likely to have active AD.

  • Younger age and being an ex-smoker were linked to active AD.

  • Female sex and daily smoking raised the risk in participants aged 30-49.

  • There was no dose-response relationship between serum vitamin D levels and no link with the living environment.
