Atopic dermatitis and celiac disease: A cross-sectional study of 116,816 patients
American Journal of Clinical Dermatology Nov 11, 2019
Shalom G, Kridin K, Raviv KO, et al. - In a broad community-based population, researchers assessed the potential connection between atopic dermatitis and celiac disease. For patients participating in a large health management organization who were diagnosed with atopic dermatitis in 2002–17, demographic and clinical data were collected. Participants in the study were 116,816 patients of whom 45,157 were adults; 1909 adult patients had moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. The results obtained from this cross-sectional observational design indicate that atopic dermatitis and celiac disease were significantly associated. In individuals with atopic dermatitis, this connection highlights the need for timely screening of gastrointestinal morbidities to prevent long-term complications.
