Atherosclerotic burden and vascular risk in stroke patients with atrial fibrillation
Stroke Apr 08, 2021
Park JH, Chung JW, Bang OY, et al. - Using a prospectively registered multicenter database, researchers sought to assess how atherosclerotic vascular disease (ASVD) with atrial fibrillation (AF), vs AF only, impacts risk of vascular events in this retrospective analysis of 2,670 patients with mean age of 73.5±9.8 years. ASVD was grouped as 0, 1, 2, and 3–4 based on the number of ASVDs. For ASVD 1, ASVD 2, and ASVD 3–4, the adjusted hazard ratio for major adverse cardiovascular events vs no ASVD was estimated to be 1.25, 1.34, and 1.93, respectively. For all-cause death vs no ASVD, the estimated adjusted hazard ratio was 1.32, 1.47, and 2.39, respectively. Based on the observations, it was inferred that ASVD burden with AF can represent a cumulative marker of a high risk for untoward vascular results. Seemingly, there was a predominant impact of extracranial atherosclerosis among ASVD components.
