Asthma, sinonasal disease, and the risk of active tuberculosis

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Aug 24, 2018

Yii AC, et al. - Researchers assessed if the risk of active tuberculosis (TB) in a population-based prospective cohort is prospectively modulated by asthma and sinonasal disease in the Singapore Chinese Health Study. From 1999-2004, they conducted follow-up interviews among 52,325 surviving participants out of a total of 63,257 Chinese adults aged 45-74 years recruited from 1993-1998 in Singapore. Presence of a history of asthma at follow-up or sinonasal disease at baseline was associated with a reduced risk of active TB. Conversely, no association was observed between history of chronic bronchitis and the risk of TB. Overall, the possible modulation of immunological response by a history of asthma or sinonasal disease resulted in a reduced incidence of active TB in the adult population.
