Asthma-like symptoms in young children increase the risk of COPD
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Aug 23, 2020
Bisgaard H, Nørgaard S, Sevelsted A, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between asthma-like symptoms in young children and the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Data from 3,290 mother-child pairs who underwent examinations during pregnancy and when the children were aged 1, 3, and 6 years were investigated in a population-based cohort of women who gave birth at the central hospital in Copenhagen during the period from 1959 to 1961. A subgroup of 930 people had spirometry testing at age 50 years. This 60-year prospective follow-up of a mother-child cohort showed a doubled risk for COPD from childhood asthma-like symptoms.
