Asthma is the dominant factor for recurrence in chronic rhinosinusitis

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Oct 21, 2019

Sella GCP, Tamashiro E, Sella JA, et al. - In order to identify risk factors influencing recurrence risk in patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), researchers undertook this inquiry in surgically managed CRS patients observed for an average duration of 12 years in a nonconcurrent cohort. Participants were 201 patients in total. Findings revealed an inferior prognosis in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) when compared with that in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP). The only factor that raised the likelihood of recurrence in patients with either CRSsNP or CRSwNP was asthma. Despite no link of eosinophilia itself with a higher probability of recurrence, its presence did have an impact on the consequence of CRSwNP vs CRSsNP and on the influence of asthma among patients with CRSwNP.
