Asthma hospitalizations among homeless children in New York state
Pediatrics Aug 06, 2019
Sakai-Bizmark R, et al. - Researchers conducted this investigation to evaluate asthma-attributed healthcare use among homeless youth. They assume that rates of hospitalization for asthma, the severity of symptoms, and admission through the emergency department will be greater among homeless youth vs nonhomeless youth. From 2009 to 2014, this secondary data analysis identified homeless and nonhomeless pediatric patients (< 18 years old) with a primary diagnosis of asthma from New York statewide inpatient databases. Seventy-one thousand eight hundred thirty-seven asthma hospitalizations were identified, yielding 73.8 and 2.3 hospitalizations per 1,000 homeless and nonhomeless children, respectively. Homeless youth experience 31 times greater asthma hospitalization rates than nonhomeless youth, with greater readmission rates. Homeless youth live in conditions that are uniquely challenging. Tailored strategies for asthma control and educational intervention could significantly reduce hospitalizations. There were no significant differences in ICU admittance, cost, or length of stay.
