Asthma exacerbations in a subtropical area and the role of respiratory viruses: A cross-sectional study
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Jul 09, 2018
Costa LDC, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers explored the link between severe asthma exacerbations, acute respiratory viral infections, and other potential risk factors. For a period of 12 months, asthmatic children aged 4-14 years were recruited. Three or more visits to the emergency room in the past 12 months and nonadherence to inhaled corticosteroid were the only factors associated with exacerbation, upon multivariate analysis. No differences were found in the viral rates between children with and without exacerbation. Therefore, viruses might not be the only reasons for asthma exacerbations in this population.
