Asthma diagnosis among children along an urban-rural gradient
Journal of Asthma Feb 22, 2019
Oluwole O, et al. - Researchers investigated for under-diagnosis of asthma in rural children vs urban children, given that studies have reported lower asthma prevalence in rural vs urban areas. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 2013 including schoolchildren across an urban-rural gradient in Saskatchewan, Canada. “No asthma,” “at-risk-for-asthma,” and “diagnosed asthma" were the categories defined after taking into account the survey responses, and based on a validated asthma algorithm, participants were divided as having “no asthma” or “probable asthma”. Overall, 335 schoolchildren (aged 7–17 years) were surveyed, with 73.4% from large urban, 13.7% from small urban, and 12.8% from rural areas. They found that rural children experienced under-diagnosis of asthma. This emphasized that, over and above symptoms history, objective measures should be used when investigating asthma across urban-rural gradients.
