Asthma and all-cause mortality in children and young adults: A population-based study
Thorax Sep 25, 2020
Osvald EC, Bower H, Lundholm C, et al. - Researchers performed this register-based study to examine the link between asthma in children and young adults and all-cause death, as well as to determine variations in death rate by also having a life-limiting condition (LLC) or by parental socioeconomic status (SES). Participants were 2,775,430 persons born in Sweden between January 1986 and December 2012. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was applied to estimate the link between asthma and all-cause mortality. In asthma cases vs non-asthma cases, the adjusted hazard rate for all-cause mortality was estimated to be 1.46. The highest raised rate seemed to be for those aged 5–15 years. Findings revealed increased mortality in relation to asthma in children and young adults irrespective of LLC or parental SES.
