Associations of self-reported history of depression and antidepressant use before stroke onset with poststroke post–acute rehabilitation care—an exploratory study: The BASIC (Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi) Project

Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 27, 2019

Stulberg EL, Dong L, Zheutlin AR, et al. - In this population-based study, researchers investigated the influence of prestroke depression status on post–acute rehabilitation care (PARC). They obtained incident ischemic stroke cases from the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi Project from 2008 to 2012. Participants self-reported their prestroke depression status, which was characterized as never depressed, history of depression without antidepressant use prior to stroke onset, or antidepressant use prior to stroke onset. Home, a skilled nursing facility, or an inpatient rehabilitation facility was included in PARC. There was an overall total of 548 stroke survivors (mean age 65.3 years, 48.3% female, 62.6% Mexican-American). Increased odds of home and inpatient rehabilitation facility discharge vs discharge to a skilled nursing facility discharge may be more likely with antidepressant use before stroke onset.
