Associations of seasonal variations and meteorological parameters with incidences of upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jul 27, 2021
Guo CG, Tian L, Zhang F, et al. - Researchers sought to examine the seasonal patterns of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) and lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) in Hong Kong over the recent 10-year period and the potential relationships with various meteorological factors. All patients hospitalized in Hong Kong for UGIB and LGIB between 2009 and 2018 were included in the study. The incidences of UGIB were still higher in the winter months despite a gradual decline in UGIB incidences. The incidence and fluctuation of both UGIB and LGIB were higher in older age groups, particularly those ≥ 80 years. Despite changes in GIB incidence, seasonal patterns of GIB in the elderly remained distinct. With an ageing population, seasonal variations in GIB incidences could have a significant impact.
