Associations of PTSD, chronic pain, and their comorbidity on cannabis use disorder: Results from an American nationally representative study
Depression and Anxiety Aug 03, 2019
Bilevicius E, Sommer JL, Gordon, Asmundson JG, et al. - As comorbid cannabis use disorder (CUD) can occur along with conditions like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chronic pain, for which cannabis prescription is frequently made, researchers sought for the relationship of PTSD, chronic pain, and their comorbidity with CUD. In addition, they determined CUD characteristics across PTSD and chronic pain groups. From the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III, data (N = 36,309) were analyzed for past-year CUD and PTSD using the Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule-5. Outcomes revealed elevated rates and severity of CUD in correlation with PTSD with and without chronic pain. When PTSD is comorbid with pain, PTSD seems to be driving the relationship with CUD.
