Associations of physical activity with survival and progression in metastatic colorectal cancer: Results from Cancer and Leukemia Group B (Alliance)/SWOG 80405
Journal of Clinical Oncology Oct 18, 2019
Guercio BJ, Zhang S, Ou FS, et al. - Researchers explored how regular physical activity influence patients with advanced/metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) via performing a prospective cohort study nested in Cancer and Leukemia Group B (Alliance)/SWOG 80405 (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00265850), a National Cancer Institute–sponsored phase 3 trial of systemic therapy for mCRC. Within 1 month after therapy initiation, 1,218 patients completed a validated questionnaire that reported average physical activity over the previous 2 months was completed. Metabolic equivalent task hours per week were calculated to quantify physical activity on the basis of responses. Findings suggest no statistically significant association of physical activity with overall survival among patients with mCRC in Cancer and Leukemia Group B (Alliance)/SWOG 80405. They observed an association of greater physical activity with longer progression-free survival and lower adjusted risk for first grade 3 or greater treatment-related adverse events.
