Associations of maternal diabetes and body mass index with offspring birth weight and prematurity
JAMA Pediatrics Mar 01, 2019
Kong L, et al. - In this population-based cohort study of 649,043 births, researchers analyzed associations of maternal diabetes disorders separately and in conjunction with maternal underweight or obesity, with the offspring being large for gestational age (LGA) and/or preterm at birth. Using nationwide registries, they studied all live birth in Finland between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2014. Findings suggested that maternal insulin-treated diabetes seemed to be related to markedly increased risks for LGA and preterm births. On the other hand, obesity in mothers with type 2 diabetes increased the risk from mild to moderate. These findings may have an impact on pregnancy counseling and management.
