Associations of lumbar scoliosis with presentation of suspected early axial spondyloarthritis
Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism Jun 20, 2019
Voirin-Hertz M, et al. - Through baseline weight-bearing lumbar-spine radiographs obtained in the DESIR cohort of 360 patients aged 18-50 years who had inflammatory back pain (IBP) for at least 3 months but less than 3 years the contributors determined how lumbar scoliosis modified the clinical and imaging study suggesting axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) in patients with recent onset of IBP. Between patients with and without scoliosis, no differences were concluded for radiographic sacroiliitis, MRI sacroiliitis, modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spinal Score, Pfirmmann score, high-intensity zone, protrusion, extrusion, and MODIC score. Although, degenerative changes were rare by MRI, but were predominate at L4-L5 and L5-S1. Hence, no association among lumbar scoliosis and inflammatory or degenerative changes were found in patients with early IBP suggesting axSpA.
