Associations of joint line tenderness and patellofemoral grind with long-term knee joint outcomes: Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative
Arthritis Care & Research Apr 30, 2019
Wang Y, et al. - A total of 4353 Osteoarthritis Initiative participants were studied to examine if joint line tenderness and patellofemoral grind from the physical examination were correlated with cartilage volume loss, worsening of radiographic osteoarthritis, and risk of total knee replacement. They observed patellofemoral grind in 15.8% of candidates whereas 35.0% of participants had joint line tenderness. They recorded a relation of baseline patellofemoral grind (not joint line tenderness) with increased cartilage volume loss (1.08%/year vs 0.96%/year) and increased risk of total knee replacement. Compared with those without the patellofemoral grind, the candidates with persistent patellofemoral grind had a higher rate of cartilage volume loss (1.30%/year vs 0.90%/year) and increased risk of total knee replacement, whereas the patterns of joint line tenderness were not significantly associated with joint outcomes.
