Associations of frequent pain symptoms with excessive daytime sleepiness in adolescents: A longitudinal study
Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine Jun 27, 2021
Liu X, Liu ZZ, Yang Y, et al. - Researchers investigated the cross-sectional as well as the prospective links between pain symptoms and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in a large population of adolescents. Participants included 7,072 adolescents (mean age = 14.6 years) in a follow-up study of behavior and health in Shandong, China. Among participants, moderate or severe EDS was observed at baseline and at 1-year follow-up in 19.8% and 23.2%, respectively. Findings showed a significant and independent association of frequent pain with elevated risk of EDS. To enhance healthy sleep and attenuate risk of EDS in adolescents, it is essential to evaluate as well as treat pain symptoms.
