Associations of child maltreatment and intimate partner violence with elder abuse in a US Chinese population
JAMA May 24, 2019
Dong X, et al. - Researchers analyzed the associations of child maltreatment and intimate partner violence with elder abuse in a cross-sectional study involving 3,157 US Chinese older adults in Chicago, IL. According to findings, the prevalence of elder abuse, child abuse, and intimate partner violence was 15.2%, 11.4%, and 6.5%, respectively. In addition, higher odds of elder abuse were associated with prior abuse across major lifespan stages. The investigators suggested that healthcare professionals should be more aware of the possibility of abuse if a patient has a known history of violence exposure, and should consider the cumulative effect of violence among those experiencing elder abuse.
