Associations between recent and established ophthalmic conditions and risk of Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's & Dementia Nov 14, 2018

Lee CS, et al. - Researchers investigated whether there was an association between recent and established ophthalmic conditions (glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and cataract) and risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study sample consisted of 3877 participants. They found increased AD risk for recent glaucoma diagnoses, established AMD diagnoses, and both recent and established DR. No association was found between cataract and increased AD risk. The study findings suggested that individuals with certain ophthalmic conditions might have increased AD risk.
