Associations between prediagnostic concentrations of circulating sex steroid hormones and esophageal/gastric cardia adenocarcinoma among men
Journal of the National Cancer Institute Jan 25, 2019
Petrick JL, et al. - Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and electrochemiluminescence immunoassay, investigators assessed the association of prediagnostic circulating sex steroid hormone concentrations with esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) in this cohort. They quantified sex steroid hormones and sex hormone binding globulin in serum from 259 EA/GCA male candidates and 259 matched control members from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial, Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study, and Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort. They noted an association of higher concentrations of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) with a 38% lowered risk of EA/GCA. They also found a relation of elevated estradiol and free estradiol concentrations with roughly a one-third reduced risk of EA and GCA in males.
