Associations between perceived stress and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and otoxicity in adult cancer survivors

Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Mar 12, 2018

Miaskowski C, et al. - Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (CIPN), hearing loss, and tinnitus are the most common adverse effects of neurotoxic chemotherapy. Associations between perceived stress and the occurrence of CIPN, hearing loss, and tinnitus in adult cancer survivors who received platinum and/or taxane compounds were determined. Older age, higher body mass index, poorer functional status, premature birth, cancer diagnosis, and higher intrusion, hyperarousal, and total Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) scores were associated with CIPN. Older age, male gender, poor functional status, worse co-morbidity profile, and a higher IES-R hyperarousal score were shown to be associated with hearing loss. Male gender, less education, worse co-morbidity profile, and a higher IES-R hyperarousal score were associated with tinnitus.
