Associations between paracetamol (acetaminophen) intake between 18 and 32 weeks gestation and neurocognitive outcomes in the child: A longitudinal cohort study

Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology Feb 26, 2020

Golding J, et al. - This longitudinal cohort study was undertaken to determine if paracetamol (acetaminophen) intake between 18 and 32 weeks gestation was correlated with childhood behavioural and cognitive outcomes using a large population. Data collected at 32 weeks gestation through the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children and referring to the period from 18 to 32 weeks, identified 43.9% of women who took paracetamol. It was observed that paracetamol taken in the 18-32 weeks timeframe was correlated with aspects of child attention and hyperactivity up to the age of 7, but there is little sign of adverse connections at later ages, with the exception of their sons who are more likely to exhibit conduct problems up to the age of 9. Boys seemed more vulnerable to possible drug behavioural effects than girls. As these behaviors increase, it will be important to evaluate whether they are accompanied by difficulties in scholastic achievements or whether any adverse effects survive puberty.
