Associations between non-neurological autoimmune disorders and psychosis: A meta-analysis

Cullen AE, et al. - The first meta-analysis examining the association between non-neurological autoimmune (NNAI) disorders and psychosis was performed and the effect of (a) temporality (as determined by study design), (b) psychiatric diagnosis, and (c) specific autoimmune disorders was investigated. NNAI disorders were noted to have an overall positive association with psychosis, however, this association was not consistent across all NNAI disorders. Thereby suggesting the role of specific factors, including distinct inflammatory pathways, genetic influences, autoantibodies targeting brain proteins, or exposure to corticosteroid treatment, underlying this association.
