Associations between multimorbidity and depression among breast cancer survivors within the UK Biobank cohort: A cross-sectional study
BMC Cancer Jun 04, 2021
Foster M, et al. - Researchers used the UK Biobank cohort to examine the link between multimorbidity and depression in females living with and beyond breast cancer. They identified 8,438 women with a previous diagnosis of breast cancer. Self-reported lifetime number of chronic conditions were analyzed and multimorbidity defined as 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5+. Breast cancer survivors commonly developed multimorbidity, with 32.9% of females encountering one and 30.1% having two or more chronic health conditions. The three most common comorbid conditions included hypertension (25.8%), painful conditions (18.3%), and asthma (11.6%). Findings showed a strong association between multimorbidity and depression in women with a previous breast cancer diagnosis. This link was increasingly pronounced as the number of chronic comorbid conditions increased. Since more individuals survive cancer for longer, there is a requirement for increasing recognition as well as support for multimorbidity and its influence on mental health.
