Associations between maternal BMI, breastfeeding practices and infant anthropometric status in Colombia: Secondary analysis of ENSIN 2010

BMC Public Health Feb 20, 2020

Aldana-Parra F, et al. - In this secondary analysis of data from ENSIN 2010, researchers estimated how maternal body mass index (BMI) and infant feeding mode, especially breastfeeding practices, influence the anthropometric status of children under 2 years in Colombia. This study involved term infants under 2y, singleton, with a mother older than 18y. Higher BMI was noted in mothers of overweight infants vs those with normal weight infants. Maternal anthropometry or infant feeding mode did not predict stunting and wasting. Fewer maternal years of education were related to wasting and stunting, while more maternal years of education were related to overweight; the final regression model demonstrated a link between higher birth weight and overweight as well as an association between lower birth and stunting. To promote healthy infant growth, maternal BMI was identified as a modifiable target for public health policy. Direct and indirect factors influenced infant nutritional status.
