Associations between low-carbohydrate diets from animal and plant sources and dyslipidemia among Korean adults
Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Dec 04, 2019
Kim SA, et al. - Among Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey participants (n = 12,199, aged ≥ 20 years), researchers studied the link between a low carbohydrate diet (LCD) score and dyslipidemia. In this study performed on Korean adults, the participants were grouped by gender into quintiles of LCD scores computed using 1-day 24-hour dietary recall data. Findings revealed a significant link of a higher LCD score with higher odds of hypercholesterolemia and lower odds of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in women. However, a significant link of higher LCD scores with lower odds of hypertriglyceridemia was identified in men. More particularly, a negative link of animal-based LCD scores with the odds of hypertriglyceridemia was evident in men. Based on these findings, experts recommended considering the complicated and combined influences of macronutrient composition on individual lipid components so that dyslipidemia may be prevented in Korean adults.
