Associations between Helicobacter pylori with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and other metabolic conditions in Guatemala
Helicobacter Oct 07, 2020
Alvarez CS, Florio AA, Butt J, et al. - Given that a link between Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been suggested in previous studies, researchers examined 424 participants from a cross‐sectional analysis in Guatemala (a region with increased prevalences of both H pylori and NAFLD) in order to assess NAFLD in correlation with H pylori in this area. They also focused on the links between H pylori and other metabolic conditions (obesity, central obesity, hypercholesterolemia, low HDL, diabetes and metabolic syndrome) as well as on connections between Helicobacter hepaticus and Helicobacter bilis and the metabolic conditions. Experts defined H pylori seropositivity as positivity for ≥ 4 antigens. The Fatty Liver Index and the Hepatic Steatosis Index was employed to estimate NAFLD. Findings showed that H pylori nor Helicobacter species had any overall associations with NAFLD or related conditions but some selected Helicobacter spp. antigens were shown to be related to NAFLD. To assess if H. species are related to any metabolic condition, further inquiry is warranted.
