Associations between COVID-19 and skin conditions identified through epidemiology and genomic studies
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Jan 27, 2021
Patrick MT, Zhang H, Wasikowski R, et al. - Researchers here examined the correlation between COVID-19 and skin diseases through a multi-omics approach with the aim to determine if patients with skin conditions are more susceptible to COVID-19. They performed an epidemiological study followed by a comparison of gene expression across nine different inflammatory skin conditions and SARS-CoV-2 infected bronchial epithelial cell lines. Thereafter, a GWAS trans-disease meta-analysis was conducted between COVID-19 susceptibility and two skin diseases (psoriasis and atopic dermatitis). Increased risk of COVID-19 was observed in correlation with skin conditions, including psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, however, there was a decrease in the risk of mechanical ventilation. The findings overall indicate shared components involved in anti-COVID19 immune response.
