Associations between alcohol consumption and hepatic steatosis in the USA
Liver International Aug 11, 2021
Niezen S, Trivedi HD, Mukamal KJ, et al. - According to this National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), alcohol had a considerably lesser impact on hepatic steatosis than metabolic factors and was reliant on drinking frequency.
FibroScan gathered data on detailed alcohol intake and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) from 4,509 NHANES 2017-2018 individuals.
The link between alcohol intake and CAP was less substantial when compared with metabolic risk factors including diabetes and obesity.
In multivariable analysis, only those who drank 5-7 times per week saw substantial increases in CAP scores.
Although both frequency and quantity of drinking were significantly related to CAP score, after accounting for quantity and binge drinking, only frequency remained significant.
