Associations between alcohol consumption and hepatic steatosis in the United States
Liver International Jul 28, 2021
Niezen S, Trivedi HD, Mukamal KJ, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between alcohol consumption and hepatic steatosis. FibroScan extracted data on detailed alcohol consumption and Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) from 4,509 candidates in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018. Compared with metabolic risk factors like diabetes and obesity, the link between alcohol consumption and CAP was less significant. Only those who drank 5-7 times per week showed significant increases in CAP scores in a multivariable analysis. Although both frequency and quantity of drinking were positively related to CAP score, after accounting for quantity and binge drinking, only frequency remained significant. Such epidemiological findings suggested that the effect of alcohol on hepatic steatosis was much smaller than that of metabolic factors and was dependent on drinking frequency.
