Associations between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular disease among long-term survivors of colorectal cancer: A population-based, retrospective cohort study
BMC Cancer Jun 20, 2021
Lee G, Jeong S, Choi S, et al. - In this study, the association between alcohol consumption and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) among long-term survivors of colorectal cancer (CRC) was explored. Researchers designed a population-based, retrospective cohort study utilizing data from the Korean National Insurance Service of 20,653 long-term survivors of CRC diagnosed between 2006 and 2012. There was no discernable protective relationship between alcohol consumption and incident CVD for even light-to-moderate drinking among long-term survivors of CRC. Compared with non-drinkers, alcohol consumption ≥ 40 g/day in male patients and ≥ 20 g/day in female patients was correlated with an elevated risk of stroke. These novel outcomes provide beneficial evidence when advising survivors of CRC regarding alcohol use.
