Associations between age and sleep apnea risk among newborn infants
Pediatric Pulmonology May 18, 2019
Matlen LB, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) indices, gestational age (GA), and postmenstrual age (PMA) for infants who had clinically-indicated polysomnograms at a tertiary care center. Included were every infant < 3-month chronological age whose first clinically indicated polysomnogram was between 2/2012 and 2/2017. With advancing PMA, AHI declined among infants who received clinically-indicated polysomnograms but did not have an obvious structural risk for SDB, but premature obstructive apnea was best predicted. By contrast, the risk of SDB has not improved for infants with congenital structural risk factors by increasing GA or PMA; such infants may not outgrow their risk of SDB.
