Associations among histologic characteristics and patient outcomes in colorectal carcinoma with a mucinous component
Histopathology Sep 04, 2018
Gonzalez RS, et al. - Given that colorectal carcinoma (CRC) often has a mucinous component (mCRC), with more than 50% mucin by volume defining the mucinous subtype of CRC, researchers intended to analyze the prognostic impact of the mucinous phenotype in this analysis. Results of this study suggested that comparable outcomes with no prognostic significance to morphological subtyping was seen regarding stage-matched mCRCs and adenocarcinomas. The present data indicated that histologic characteristics of mCRC, including the percentage of tumor volume comprised of mucin, were not predictive of outcome. In multivariate analysis, no parameters were independently related to outcome after adjusting for tumor stage.
